Did you know that the human egg has a shell around it (called the zona pellucida)?

First, a sperm must penetrate through the shell of the egg to fertilize it. Then, before the embryo can implant into the uterine lining it must “hatch” or break free of its shell. For couples undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), their embryos are sometimes assisted in this hatching process.
