Uterine glands and stroma that are located in the myometrium, or muscular wall of the uterus, is what Adenomyosis is. This can cause dysmenorrhea, or painful periods, and infertility.
An MRI of the pelvis can sometimes help determine if this is the diagnosis. Usually, Adenomyosis is identified on pathologic examination of the uterus after Hysterectomy. Unfortunately, the only effective treatment is a Hysterectomy.
